Portland firefighters commemorated on historic anniversary

  • Campbell, known to many Portlanders as "Our Dave," was so beloved that his funeral procession drew 150,000 people
  • On June 26, 1911, all of Portland’s firefighters were called to a massive fire at Union Oil Company, on SE Water Street
  • A hundred years later, it is still the single largest funeral procession in Portland's history
  • Fire Chief David Campbell was killed in the blaze
  • Campbell was also remembered with a ceremony at his grave in River View Cemetery
